The 1998 Training Camp Quarterback Club

Jon Kitna warms up At the time we were at training camp Warren Moon was still a holdout, so the quarterback question was Jon Kitna or John Friesz. Friesz brought experience and a cool head to the job, but this guy seemed to be the hot prospect. After watching him throw the ball a few times at camp we all decided that he deserved the starting spot if Moon didn't sign.Unfortunately, Moon did sign and Head Coach Dennis Erickson decided not to take the risk of starting a virtual rookie, or even having him as backup. So Jon Kitna started the season as #3, the Quarterback of the Future in hype only.
Kitna under Center Here he is under center. At this point he was taking snaps with some pretty mixed crews, but you can see rookie running back Ahman Green (30) just to his right.
OK, someone has to anchor the bottom end of the lineup. Jim Arellanes did a good job of that. He seemed to be mostly playing with the scrubs, but there were some flashes of pretty good play. Here he busts loose with the ball, revealing some pretty good speed and mobility. I think he ended up on the Dallas practice squad, but I would bet that he will have a good career somewhere.
